  • Being the capital and the largest city in the whole country, Thimphu definitely outshines other districts of Bhutan. Located at the westward side, Thimphu is home to more than 1,00,000 inhabitants. It is the most diverse district in the kingdom consisting of various ethnic groups such as the Ngalops, Lhotsampas and many other indigenous migrants. Bhutanese people from across the country move to Thimphu in search of Jobs but also because of the availability of superior facilities such as healthcare, education and recreational opportunities. The Royal Family of Bhutan also resides in Thimphu.
  • Thimphu was pronounced the capital of the Kingdom by His Majesty the 3rd King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk in 1960; previously the capital was Punakha District. Thimphu is unique in its own way and gradual developmental progression can be witness here. Thimphu is centre for government, religion and business. Tourists can embark on sightseeing on several breathtaking views, invigorating hikes, ride along exhilarating cycling routes, and visit popular venues such as Tashichhoe Dzong, Memorial Chorten, the famous Buddha Point and many more places.
