About Gasa

  • In the northwestern side of the country, lies the peaceful Gasa district and it is towards the extreme north of Punakha and is around three hours drive from Punakha.

  • Gasa stands at 1500 m to 4500 m above the sea level and the whole district is around 3081.77 km2. In fact it even shares its boundaries with Tibet. Gasa endures very harsh cold during the winter season.  The District has total population of around 2970 people and the spoken language around this region is Dzongkha with a very typical accent.

  • Agriculture is the major occupation here and farmers rear animals like yak to sustain them. The Gasa district contains some of the talleset peaks in the country and offers a sight of some of the most beautiful mountains in the world, that it makes one wonder how God created this entire splendor.

  • Gasa has hundreds of glacial lakes that provide Bhutan with its fresh water supply and maintains the cycles in the rivers especially in Pho chhu and Mo chhu river which at the end flows down to the India in to the Bay of Bengal. Cordycep a rare species of fungus-caterpillar which is considered a great medicine can also be found here and that’s the also provides a income for the people living as it fetches very good price in the market.

  • In addition, the whole district lies under the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National park is a biological hotspot for many plants and animals included some of the most endangered one like the snow leopard, the musk deer and the Bengal tiger.

  • Gasa is also popular for its therapeutic Hot spring and many tourist/visitors go to Gasa just to dip themselves in this miraculous  spring and achieve healing from life threatening illness. If one is tired from the daily hustle and bustle of life, the silent and serene Gasa is the place to be.
