Chimi Lhakhang

Chimi Lhakhang

  • The famous Chimi Lhakhang is situated in Punakha district in a small village known as Sopsokha. Visitors mostly opt to hike along the paddy fields, passing by a village and farm roads. The founding story of this Lhakhang goes back to 15th century, which was consecrated by Lam Drukpa Kinley as famously known as “The Divine Madman”.
  • Chimi Lhakhang is popular as it is also acknowledged as a temple where couples receive blessing of fertility. This Lhakhang is a single structure designed in a Bhutanese manner surrounded by prayer wheels, murals and exotic slate figures.
  • According to legend, the Yogi had buried Dochula Demon underneath the giant rock close to the temple. The use of Phallus symbols was greatly encouraged by Lam Drukpa Kinley along the design of temples and paintings. The phallus symbolized peace and prosperity, as it offers protection from evil and dispels malicious gossip as well.
  • Visitors have the opportunity to receive blessings in this temple and also make offerings. Along the hike towards the Lhakhang, one also has the opportunity to do some sightseeing, photography and to purchase artifacts from mini textile shops.
