Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten

  • Khasum Yulley Namgyal is a beautiful chorten located on ridge at Kabesa Gewog in Punakha overlooking several villages. It is 30-minute drive from the Khuruthang Town and a 45-minute uphill hike from the base of the hill through suspension bridge and rice fields.
  • It was built by the Queen Mother Ashi Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck, for exerting a pull on peace and harmony for living beings. It was designed with respect to the values and virtues bestowed in the sacred scripture. The temple is three storied built in a unique Bhutanese architect and was consecrated in December 1999.
  • Tourists can witness a very incredible and complex iconography, the deities represent teaching cycle of great Nyingmapa master, Dudjom Rinpoche and their function is to subjugate enemies and harmful influences as well as to spread peace and harmony. The ground floor contains the images of Dorje Phurpa (Vajrakilaya), the first floor is dedicated to Khamsum Namgyal, one of the most powerful manifestation of Dorje Phurpa which gives a positive force that subdue the negative influence in the three worlds. The second floor contains the images of Nampar Gyalwa, another powerful manifestation of Dorje Phurpa and also contains the statue of Buddha Shakyamuni, which come from Punakha Dzong offered by the Zhung Dratshang (the Monastic Body).
  • Tourists while visiting the chorten can see the gorgeous Bodhi tree and the beautiful compounds with prayer wheels, special shelters and beautiful paintings and murals of the protective deity.
