Trongsa Dzong

  • The Trongsa Dzong (fortress) is situated in the midst of Trongsa district on a mountain range just above the swift Mangde Chhu River. The Dzong is the first sight one gets greeted with, when visiting Trongsa.
  • The massive Dzong is built on a hill in an intricate fashion which is very traditional Bhutanese in design.  It is five storied tall and the whole structure can be divided into four divisions.
  • The discovery of the site where the dzong is built today dates back to 1543 when Yongzin Ngagi Wangchuck meditated at Yueli, Trongsa where he saw a butter lamp lit on the ridge where the temple of Protective deity that is the Goenkhang stands today. He considered this place as a sacred site and continued meditating there. Many people had become followers of him and later built houses which slowly turned into a village which is where Trongsa also got its name the ‘New Village’.
  • Both administrative and monastic conducts are functioned in the Dzong. Every winter during December or January the annual Trongsa festival is held at the Dzong.  For centuries, Trongsa Dzong has been the seat for the Wangchuck dynasty who have benevolent sovereign of the nation.
  • Tourist can experience the unique combination of administrative workplace and monastic regulation. The Dzong itself is one of a kind and it is one of the most important Dzongs in the history of Bhutan and visiting this iconic structure is definitely something to consider.
